Here at Happy Gardens, we chat with many garden lovers every day. And these customers are all different. They come from all over the country, and many of them have gardens much smaller than you’d think! Too often, we focus on how the unique garden decor we sell looks in sprawling, suburban outdoor spaces.

That’s why we’re taking making it a point to share a handful of great tips and tricks for making even the smallest of outdoor spaces an inviting, relaxing and adorable space to take in some fresh air.

  5. Introduce Wire Garden Animals

  7. Hang A Few Outdoor Mobiles
  8. Don’t Forget About Rain Chains

1. Save Space with Vertical Gardens

Vertical Gardens

If you’ve got just a smidgen of outdoor space, it makes sense to start decorating vertically.

We’ve seen some really impressive vertical gardens in the past decade or so. From succulent walls to even vegetables and herbs, if you’ve got the right sun exposure and the right budget, you can make it work.

If you lack a green thumb but still crave some urban green space, there are artificial solutions that look pretty darn good, too.

2. Pick Out Charming Wall Decor

Happy Gardens - TRIPLE TWIG WIRE HOOK

We also recommend adding unique patio wall hangings and outdoor garden wall art to your small space. Depending on your desired aesthetic, you may choose pieces that are modern or traditional.

A few of our favorites include this Sun and Moon Wall Hanging, which is quite transitional, and this Calla Lily Wall Decor Disc, which is traditional with an Eastern flare.

3. Create Storage Space While You Decorate

If you’re feeling decorative and want to boost storage, too, a decorative object with hooks or shelves is a great choice. We love this rustic twig wire hook, which can be used to store anything from cute ornaments to little hanging plants.

You can also paint and waterproof an old bookshelf, repurposing it to display cute decor and fun potted plants.

4. Get Some Great Seating

You’ll enjoy your urban oasis a whole lot more if you have a nice place to sit down and unwind. Now, you may dream of a rocking chair on your front porch, but you’re better off buying seating that actually suits the space that you’ve got.

There are cute bistro sets that fold up nicely so they’ll only take up space when in use. Or you could even try a DIY project like building a bench that fits your space perfectly.

You can find outdoor furniture online and at regular furniture shops. Some of our customers have found really cool stuff at garage sales, too.

5. Introduce Wire Garden Animals

Happy Gardens - CATERPILLAR GARDEN STATUE

Have a favorite animal? Turn that quirk into a vibe with wire animals for garden spaces! In our shop alone, we offer a huge variety of wire garden animals, including our best-selling dog river stone garden statue. More of a cat person? No worries! You can even find a caterpillar, a tortoise and a very leggy spider.

6. Try Traditional Small Stone Statues

Happy Gardens - 7-STONE CAIRN GARDEN STATUE

Not everyone’s into animals. If that’s you, nice rock garden statues still go a long way to add depth and texture to an urban garden. Best of all, you can find really small, unique ones that elevate your patio’s aesthetic without taking up too much space.

This seven-stone cairn garden statue goes with both traditional and modern styles.

7. Hang A Few Outdoor Mobiles

Happy Gardens - DRAGONFLY BRANCH HANGING MOBILE

Many urban gardens are apartment decks and patios with awnings and overhangs. If your garden has a roof, you can use it to hang unique wind chimes and beautiful outdoor mobiles that add character and spatial diversity to your garden.

A couple of our favorites for small spaces: this folksy heart ornament wind chime and this natural-looking dragonfly branch hanging mobile.

A helpful hint for you and your neighbors: wind chimes make noise, while chime-less mobiles do not.

8. Don’t Forget About Rain Chains

If your small outdoor space gets rain, a rain chain can help redirect running water to gutters and drains. And even if you don’t experience much weather in your outdoor space, rain chains are pretty enough to post, anyway!

Everything you need to install a rain chain is usually included with the product, and installation is rather simple. Our best-selling ones include this multicolor heart rain chain and lily cup rain chain.  This classic hummingbird rain chain also sells out frequently.
